The September issue of the Monthly Club Brewer is dedicated to the dawning of a new semester, ushering in the talented and accomplished class of 2009. Many Vassar clubs take an active role in the admissions process by interviewing prospective students, representing Vassar at local college fairs, congratulating admitted students, and welcoming enrolling students to the Vassar family.

I want to send a special thank you to all who completed the online survey. I received a large response from our club volunteers with a great deal of meaningful, constructive feedback.

Salve,
Charlene Larson ’05
Assistant Director of Alumnae/i Relations

    Club Spotlight: Fairfield County VC

The Vassar Club of Fairfield County held a social event in August for newly admitted students. Hosted by Michaela MacColl ’88 in Westport, the event brought eight students and their families together with local alums. Vassar legends were shared by alums, roommate worries were shared by the freshmen, and ride-sharing information was shared by the parents. A good time was had by all.

Class of 2009: Who are they?

Two licensed pilots, eight National Hispanic Scholars, 27 valedictorians, 37 class or student council presidents, 60 editors–in–chief of major high school publications, 109 students with perfect scores on one or more standardized tests, 130 varsity sports captains, a semi–finalist in the International Open Poetry competition, an Irish step dancing champion, an accomplished hula dancer, a professional bluegrass fiddler, a volunteer with over 650 hours of community service, and 43 legacies including a fifth–generation Vassar legacy (whose alumnae/i ties date back to his great–great–grandmother in the class of 1888). They have an average combined SAT of 1386 (a new Vassar record). They’re from 48 states (plus D.C., Guam, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico) and 27 foreign countries.

Welcome to the Class of 2009!

Fall Convocation

On a pleasant late-summer day, September 7, President Fran Fergusson officially welcomed the class of 2009.

The Fall Convocation address was delivered by Judith L. Weisenfeld, associate professor of religion, entitled On Religion, Race, and American Identity.

Transcripts from Fall Convocation are available online at: http://collegerelations.vassar.edu/remarks/
