Reunion 2008 Highlights

1,166 Alumnae/i Return for Reunion 2008

Though temperatures reached into the 90s, nothing could dampen the spirits of the alumnae/i and friends and family that came to campus earlier this month. Reunion revelers stayed cool by hanging out in the air-conditioned refuges such as the bookstore or Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center; grabbing a cool drink or ice cream at the Retreat; catching a breeze on a golf cart ride; or making use of an impromptu slip ’n slide with the class of ’98 on Joss Beach.

Alumnae/i from 14 nations, including Cambodia, Russia, Sweden, and Nigeria, arrived on campus, along with two members of the class of ’33 celebrating their 75th reunion. And the class of 2003 posted impressive numbers with 232 classmates in attendance. Friday night’s all-class dinner was a zero-waste event. Campus catering worked with the college’s Sustainability Committee to make sure all food and material was either compostable or reusable. And, many returning alumnae/i shared their Vassar stories with oral historian Esther Ehrlich ’83 of StoryLines as part of AAVC's new Vassar Stories Project. Watch a sneak peek at some of these stories.

Hard Hat Report
Every summer, Buildings and Grounds uses these months to complete or start construction projects on campus, in order to minimize the effect on the academic year. This summer the following projects are on the schedule:

  • Prentiss Fields: Final work will be completed on the last phase of improvements for the sports fields at Prentiss. Artificial turf was installed for playing and practice fields for field sports, and the baseball team now enjoys an outfield fence and dugouts. Lighting for evening games and team practice also was installed.
  • Maria Mitchell Observatory: The interior space in the old observatory will be renovated to create faculty office space and classroom space for the education department, as well as an office for the Vassar Historian.
  • Davison: The dorm will undergo a complete renovation and will not house students during the 2008–09 academic year.
  • Town Houses: The college is building a new block of Town Houses and the access road from Hooker Avenue is being redone. The new student housing is slated for completion this fall.
  • Raymond Avenue Project: The New York State Department of Transportation is renovating Raymond Avenue to slow and quiet traffic. Phase II of this project is now underway. This phase, in the Arlington Business District, includes a roundabout at Collegeview Avenue, reducing four lanes to two lanes, new parking configurations, and installation of a median, walks, and curbs.
