Out of Shape: Stylistic Distortions of the Human Form in Art from the Logan Collection
The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College presents the exhibition Out of Shape: Stylistic Distortions of the Human Form in Art from the Logan Collection which will be on view from March 14 until June 8, 2008. Vicki Logan, a member of Vassar class of 1968, and her husband Kent began collecting contemporary art in 1993 and quickly amassed hundreds of artworks — both masterworks from the past thirty years and examples of newer works by emerging artists — into a collection that is marked by rare quality, range, and depth. It is their vision, generosity, and commitment to supporting artists in whom they believe that allows us to bring this extraordinary artwork to our audience and to enrich the lives and educations of the students at Vassar College.

The exhibition will be the first to focus exclusively on works on paper from this outstanding collection of the art of our time. An exhibition made up of works on paper gives visitors a rare opportunity to see the creative impulse of the artistic process, in which the immediacy of drawing allows artists to express preliminary and often raw ideas, and allows spontaneous imagery or thoughts to emerge. Out of Shape not only reflects the personal preferences, beliefs, and interests of the collectors, but also presents a sample of the attitudes toward and concerns with the human form that are evinced in much of the art being made today. Many of the artists in the Logan Collection are known for their depictions of the human form to explore issues of psychological identity as well as to reinvent figuration as a conceptual tool. Art by the following artists will be featured in the exhibition: Laylah Ali, Cecily Brown, Francesco Clemente, George Condo, John Currin, Kim Dingle, Nicole Eisenman, Moyna Flannigan, Gajin Fujita, Antony Gormley, Oliver Herring, Kurt Kauper, Fang Lijun, Kelly McLane, Jason Middlebrook, Bruce Nauman, Chris Ofili, Richard Phillips, Marc Quinn, Mel Ramos, Thomas Schütte, Nicola Tyson, Andy Warhol, John Wesley, Su-en Wong, and Lisa Yuskavage. These twenty-six artists have each made an extraordinary contribution to the current experimental period of art making.
