Galápagos Islands: A Family Adventure
August 22 – 31
The Galápagos Islands, located 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, are the natural habitat for some of the world’s most unusual animals.
The archipelago is one of the world’s great remaining natural areas, full of wonder, beauty, and unusual wildlife. This remarkable journey brings you face-to-face with this extraordinary wildlife sanctuary. With an experienced staff of naturalists, you will encounter wildlife that does not fear people and is so abundant that you may have to watch your footing to avoid disturbing the nap of a resting sea lion or a passing iguana.
Animal life varies from island to island, but likely encounters include penguins fishing off the rocky lava shores, sea lions frolicking in the waters, blue-footed boobies performing courtship “dance” rituals, male frigate birds ballooning their crimson chest pouches to attract females, and slow-moving tortoises. You can snorkel with playful sea lions amid the incredible variety of fish and sea turtles, kayak and swim, or find a quiet corner on a deserted beach. Nimble Zodiacs allow you to nose into landfalls and cruise along reefs, which afford an up-close view of the wildlife. Bring the kids or grandkids, or come alone. Our intimate 80-passenger ship lets us experience the Galápagos in comfort and style.
Lectures by Associate Professor of Geology Kirsten Menking on the geology and geography of the islands will enlighten you as you explore this splendid place.
