Mongolia: A Total Solar Eclipse
July 24 – August 3
Experience Mongolia in a most extraordinary way, when on August 1, 2008, a rare total solar eclipse arcs across the magnificent Altay Mountains in Western Mongolia.
Mongolia brings to mind images of Genghis Khan, camels wandering the Gobi Desert, and wild horses galloping across the wide-open steppes. Start in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital, where museums, temples, and monasteries abound. Next fly to the Gobi Desert to explore the spectacular red rock mountains, narrow canyons, and immense sand dunes, and enjoy accommodation in yurts, or gers, the traditional tented homes of the Mongolian herders. Comfortable gers are private and equipped with a real bed.
Then fly to Hovd and travel deep into the Altay Mountains, where your group will have a private camp and observation site near the centerline of the path of the total solar eclipse. The eclipse will take place around 6:00 P.M. and last for 2:09 minutes. Professor Chromey will lecture on the eclipse, prior to and after this spectacular event.
Join the post-trip extension to Bayangobi and Karakorum, which includes a visit to a horse breeder’s camp to learn how airag, Mongolia’s national drink of fermented mare’s milk, is produced. You will also visit Erdene Zuu, once one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia.
Price: from $4,295 per person, double occupancy
