The New Face of Spain: La Rioja Wine Region and the Basque Region
October 19 - 26
Join AAVC and Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies Eva Woods as we tour the La Rioja Wine Region and the Basque country of Spain. Our home base for six nights will be the elegant four-star Hotel Carlton, located in the center of the lovely city of Bilbao. From the hotel it is an easy walk to the Guggenheim Museum (left), Old Town, and the best areas for Spanish tapas.
Take an in-depth tour in its celebrated 10th anniversary year of the Guggenheim Museum, a contemporary art museum designed by Frank Gehry. Preceding the tour will be a private talk by a senior museum official. Enjoy private wine tastings at two vineyards in the Rioja Valley, renowned as one of the best wine-growing regions in Spain. Tour the idyllic seaside resort of San Sabastián, where you enjoy a free afternoon to explore on your own. Visit the infamous city of Guernika, a city reduced to rubble by a bombing raid in the Spanish Civil War, to learn about the significance of this dreadful event in Basque history. Exclusive visits to local artists’ studios, meals in private homes, and lectures by Professor Woods will also be offered as we learn about the cultural wealth and history of Bilbao and the Basque country.
Price from $3,995 per person, double occupancy. Single supplement: $495.
